How to Change an Image Background in MS Paint (Green Screen)
You want to change the background of an image. However, Adobe Photoshop and other photo-editing software can be expensive. Perhaps you just want to remove the background and replace it with a solid colour or pattern. However you want to change the image background, there is an easy way to do it: “green-screening.”

1Open the image in Microsoft (MS) Paint. This should be the file for which you want to change the background. Compatible formats include Bitmap (BMP), Digital Decompression (JPEG), and Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). To open the image:- Click “File” in the upper-left corner of the screen. The “File” button is located to the left of the “Home” tab.
- Click “Open…” in the menu that appears.
- Search for the file on your computer, either by checking the folders in the left-hand sidebar or by typing the filename into the search bar.
- Double-click the file to open it.

2Zoom in, if necessary. If the image is larger than your screen, move it to the bottom-left corner. Zoom in to 800 percent by clicking the magnifying glass icon (on the toolbar) and then selecting 8.- Zooming will be particularly helpful if the image you’re selecting has a specific or rough outline.

3Click on the “Home” toolbar near the top of the program. -
4Click on the “Select” button. It is the dashed outline of a shape located in the “Image” section of the home toolbar. -
5Click “Free-Form Selection”. This will allow you to make a clear distinction between the image you want in your foreground and the image you want as your background. -
6Set the image settings to transparent. Failure to do this will result in the background from the original picture being pasted over the new background.- Click the “Transparent Selection” button at the bottom of the menu where you clicked “Free-Form Selection”.[1]

7Outline your image. Carefully click and drag your mouse around the image that you would like to select. Release the mouse when you have completed the outline.- Don’t release the mouse until the selection is complete, or your selection will be inaccurate.
- Don’t worry too much about accuracy. You can use the eraser tool to erase the redundant triangles and spots.[2]

8Erase the spots. Click the eraser tool and select the smallest square on the menu that appears. Erase all of the spots around the shape that you missed whilst deleting the rectangles. You now have a green-screened object. -
9Click “Cut”. This button is located in the “Home” toolbar and is marked with a pair of scissors. When you click cut, you’ll notice the image you selected disappear from the rectangular selection that you made. Don’t worry – this just means the image has been copied to your clipboard, and is ready to be transferred somewhere else. -
10Open your background image. Click the “File” button and click on “Open”. Then, double-click on the image you would like to use as your background. -
11Paste your selected image onto the new background. Press Ctrl + V to paste the image you have saved to your clipboard on top of a new image. You’ve successfully changed its background!

- If you have a rounded edge you can use the curved line tool – click on the curvy line option from the toolbar and draw the straight line from the beginning of the curve to the end. then drag the line outwards with your mouse to suit the curve.
- Using this method, green screening is not as easy as it is using software like Adobe Photoshop. But it does a reasonably good job provided you are careful.
- It’s much easier to edit more detailed images if you zoom in all the way. You can do this by clicking “View” “Zoom” and “Custom”, or the zoom icons on the tops if you’re using a newer version of paint.
- The larger your image is, the longer it will take to go around it. If you want to make it smaller, press Ctrl+A and drag the bottom-right adjustment notch upwards – try to keep the proportion, as your image will be contorted if you don’t.
- Quite often you’re likely to make a mistake or redo a line. keep your fingers on the Ctrl+Z keys, as this key combination allows you to undo the last action.
- In order for this method to work, the paste settings must be set to transparent. Failure to do this will result in the background from the original picture being pasted over the new background. The paste settings toolbar appears below the main toolbar at the left-hand side of your image when either selection tool is used.[3]
Warnings
- It goes without saying that if your computer crashes or you close paint accidentally, any unsaved changes will be lost. To prevent loss of too much work, tap Ctrl+S periodically.
- Don’t make too many mistakes at once! The Undo tool in Paint only works on the last 3 actions in Windows XP, 10 in Vista, and 50 in Windows 7 and 8. If you make a mistake, reverse it immediately.
- Don’t be tempted to use your mouse pad’s scroll wheel while holding down the eraser. A fundamental bug in MS Paint causes a huge green streak down your object, and it cannot be undone with the undo (Ctrl+Z) tool.[4]
