Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax Dies in Murder-Suicide Amid Divorce Proceedings

Justin Fairfax, once considered a rising figure in American politics, died in an apparent murder-suicide after fatally shooting his wife, Cerina Fairfax, at their home in Annandale, Virginia, authorities said.

Police responded to reports of a shooting shortly after midnight on April 16, 2026. Upon arrival, officers found both Justin and Cerina Fairfax dead inside the residence. Investigators believe Fairfax shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. The couple’s two teenage children were in the home at the time; one of them placed the emergency call that alerted authorities.

Law enforcement officials say the incident appears to be linked to an ongoing and contentious divorce between the couple. Fairfax had recently been served with legal papers tied to upcoming court proceedings, and investigators are examining whether the escalating dispute contributed to the violence. Authorities have described the case as a domestic-related murder-suicide, though the investigation remains active.

The tragedy follows a period of reported tension within the household. Earlier this year, Fairfax had accused his wife of assault, but that claim was later contradicted by home surveillance footage. No charges were filed in connection with the allegation.

Fairfax, 47, served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022. A Democrat, he was at one point widely viewed as a promising political figure. However, his career was significantly derailed in 2019 after two women accused him of sexual assault—allegations he denied. The controversy cast a long shadow over his political future and contributed to his unsuccessful bid for governor in 2021.

In the years that followed, Fairfax largely retreated from public life. News of his death, under such violent and tragic circumstances, has reignited discussion about his complicated legacy—one marked by early promise, public controversy, and a deeply troubling end.

Authorities say the Fairfax children are now in the care of relatives. Officials have not released further details as the investigation continues.
